University of Community Health, Magway (UCH) traces its proud origins to 1951 when it was first established as the Health Assistant Training School in Yangon. In December 1991, it merged with the Aung San Health Demonstration Unit (Field Department) to become the School of Health Science for Basic Health Workers. The institution was upgraded to university status in 1995, becoming Myanmar's only community health university.
In 1999, the military government relocated UCH from Yangon Division to its current 41.4-hectare (102-acre) campus at Htonpauk, 14.5 km north of Magway city. UCH is the only university in Myanmar that produces Basic Health Workers (Health Assistants), who serve as the backbone of primary healthcare in rural Myanmar where access to regular physicians is limited. Graduates are licensed to practice in the Department of Public Health and FDA across the country.
