University of Dental Medicine, Yangon (UDMY) traces its prestigious origins to 1964 when the Revolutionary Council established the College of Dental Medicine as Myanmar's only dental education institute, with technical cooperation from the British Government under the Colombo Plan. The first principal was Prof. Dr. U Aung Than, Oral and Plastic Surgeon of Yangon General Hospital, reinforced by Sir Robert Bradlaw from the United Kingdom.
Originally located at Yangon General Hospital campus (corner of Shwedagon Pagoda Road and Bogyoke Aung San Road), the institution was upgraded to Institute of Dental Medicine (IDM) in 1974. In 1997, IDM moved to its current purpose-built campus on Than Thu Mar Road, Thingangyun Township. Upgraded to university status in 2003, UDMY now offers Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Master of Dental Science (MDSc), Doctor of Dental Science (DrDSc), and PhD programs. With 1,058 students and 154 teaching staff, UDMY remains Myanmar's leading dental school, producing the nation's elite dentists and dental specialists.
