About Myanmar Maritime University
Myanmar Maritime University (MMU) is Myanmar's only university dedicated entirely to maritime and naval disciplines. Established in 2002 under the Myanmar Maritime University Act (State Peace and Development Council Law No. 1/2002), it was built to produce degree-qualified engineers, naval architects, and nautical science officers for Myanmar's maritime, port, and coastal sectors.
The university occupies a purpose-built campus in Thanlyin, near Thilawa Port on the outskirts of Yangon — placing students in direct proximity to one of Myanmar's most significant port and industrial zones. This location gives students real-world industry exposure throughout their studies.
MMU operates under the Ministry of Transport and Communications and aligns all programs with international STCW-95 standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It is widely regarded as one of Myanmar's most selective universities, with graduates placed in shipyards, shipping companies, port authorities, and offshore engineering roles both domestically and internationally.
Why Choose MMU?
Only Maritime University in Myanmar
MMU is Myanmar's sole university offering full engineering and science degrees in maritime, naval, and coastal disciplines — making it irreplaceable for serious maritime careers.
International Standards
All programs are aligned with STCW-95 (IMO framework), ensuring graduates meet the international standards required for seafaring and maritime engineering careers globally.
Strategic Campus Location
Situated near Thilawa Port and Special Economic Zone — students benefit from proximity to Myanmar's most active maritime and industrial hub throughout their studies.
High Graduate Placement
Known for strong placement of graduates in international shipping, offshore engineering, port authorities, and ship design firms — both within Myanmar and abroad.
Broad Engineering Scope
From naval architecture and coastal engineering to marine electrical systems — MMU's seven departments cover the full spectrum of maritime and marine engineering disciplines.
Postgraduate Pathways
Since 2012, MMU offers two-year postgraduate diplomas for professionals seeking advanced specialization in marine and naval disciplines beyond the undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate Degree Programs
Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Science — aligned with STCW-95 international maritime standards
Naval Architecture
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringTrains engineers in the design, construction, and analysis of ships and marine structures. Covers hull form design, structural analysis, stability, resistance and propulsion, and offshore platform engineering.
Marine Engineering
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringCovers the operation, design, and maintenance of marine propulsion systems, shipboard machinery, and auxiliary equipment. Prepares graduates for engineer officer certification and shore-based technical management roles.
Marine Electrical Systems & Electronics
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringFocuses on shipboard electrical systems, automation, control systems, and marine electronics. Graduates serve as electro-technical officers (ETOs) on modern vessels or in automated port terminal engineering roles.
Marine Mechanical Engineering
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringApplied mechanical engineering focused on marine contexts — covering fluid mechanics, heat transfer, material science, and ship machinery systems for maintenance and design roles in the marine sector.
Port and Harbour Engineering
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringSpecialized civil and maritime engineering for the design and construction of ports, quay walls, breakwaters, jetties, and harbour infrastructure. Directly linked to Myanmar's port expansion and Thilawa SEZ development.
River and Coastal Engineering
B.E. — Bachelor of EngineeringFocuses on river channel management, flood protection, coastal erosion control, and water resource infrastructure. Highly relevant to Myanmar's extensive river network and climate-adaptation challenges.
Nautical Science
B.Sc. (Hons) — Bachelor of ScienceThe navigation officer pathway — training deck cadets through navigation, watchkeeping, cargo management, ship safety, and STCW-95 officer competency requirements. Graduates progress toward Officer of the Watch and eventually Master Mariner certification.

Academic Events & Activities
Regular events and key activities at Myanmar Maritime University
New Batch Admission and Orientation Events
Each academic year, MMU holds orientation and admission events for incoming batches — including the 2025–2026 academic year intake. These events introduce new students to the university's maritime academic culture, STCW requirements, and campus facilities.
Knowledge-Sharing Seminars and Industry Talks
MMU regularly hosts seminars for staff and students on topics relevant to maritime and technical education. Recent examples include an AI awareness lecture for students and faculty, as well as curriculum-related workshops tied to individual departments such as Port & Harbour Engineering and Naval Architecture.
Department-Level Industry Meetings and Curriculum Workshops
Individual departments hold industry-academia meetings to keep curricula aligned with port, shipping, and engineering sector needs. The River and Coastal Engineering and Port and Harbour Engineering departments maintain documented curriculum development pages linked to ongoing industry engagement.
Inter-Department Sports Events and Competitions
MMU runs inter-department sporting events including football tournaments and other recreational competitions, supporting student welfare and university community building alongside the demanding technical curriculum.
University Convocation and Examination Ceremonies
MMU holds formal convocation ceremonies for graduating students, along with examination results announcements and academic milestone events that mark the progression of cadets and engineering students through the university's rigorous programs.
