University of Medicine 1, Yangon (UM1) was formally established in 1927, though its roots trace back to the Government Medical School founded in 1907 at Rangoon General Hospital. By 1937, the M.B.,B.S. (Rgn) degree was recognized by the UK's General Medical Council โ a distinction that cemented its global standing. Today, UM1 remains the most competitive and prestigious medical institution in Myanmar, producing generations of physicians, researchers, and health leaders.
With an annual intake of only ~400 students from the country's entire science cohort, admission to UM1 is among the hardest-won achievements in Myanmar's education system. Graduates are recognized internationally through ECFMG accreditation, opening doors to postgraduate studies and licensing in the United States, United Kingdom, and beyond.
