The University of Medicine, Taunggyi (UMTgi) was established on 3 October 2015, with its first enrollment of 200 students in December 2015 โ drawn primarily from Shan State and Kayah State. It is one of only five medical universities in Myanmar, and the only one serving the vast highland regions of the country.
Situated on a 46-acre campus of 22 buildings along National Highway No. 4, approximately 3.4 km southeast of Taunggyi city centre, UMTgi was founded as part of Myanmar's ambitious 30-year healthcare policy โ aiming to raise the doctor-to-population ratio from 1:3300 in 2000 to 10:1100 by 2030. Its motto, แฅแแแฌแแถ แ แกแแฏแแแนแแฌ แ แแแฌ โ Service, Sympathy, Humanity โ reflects its founding commitment to compassionate, community-centred medicine.

Myanmar 30-Year Healthcare Vision (2000โ2030)
UMTgi was established as a direct outcome of Myanmar's national healthcare policy to dramatically improve the doctor-to-population ratio โ from 1:3300 in 2000 to the target of 10:1100 by 2030. UMTgi serves the most underserved highland regions of the country, making it a strategic institution in Myanmar's health future.
Student Selected Component (SSC)
UMTgi's curriculum includes a dedicated Student Selected Component in Medical Year 5, allowing students to pursue focused research or clinical interest projects in areas of personal passion โ building research skills and academic independence before the final House Surgeon year.
Teaching Hospital Clinical Program
Students complete structured clinical rotations at Sao San Tun General Hospital and Taunggyi Women's and Children's Hospital โ gaining hands-on experience in Medicine, Surgery, OB/GYN, Child Health, Psychiatry, Traumatology, and Community Medicine across the full House Surgeon year.
