The University of Medicine, Taunggyi (UMTgi) was established on 3 October 2015, with its first enrollment of 200 students in December 2015 โ€” drawn primarily from Shan State and Kayah State. It is one of only five medical universities in Myanmar, and the only one serving the vast highland regions of the country.

Situated on a 46-acre campus of 22 buildings along National Highway No. 4, approximately 3.4 km southeast of Taunggyi city centre, UMTgi was founded as part of Myanmar's ambitious 30-year healthcare policy โ€” aiming to raise the doctor-to-population ratio from 1:3300 in 2000 to 10:1100 by 2030. Its motto, แ€ฅแ€•แ€Œแ€ฌแ€”แ€ถ แŠ แ€กแ€”แ€ฏแ€€แ€™แ€นแ€™แ€ฌ แŠ แ€’แ€šแ€ฌ โ€” Service, Sympathy, Humanity โ€” reflects its founding commitment to compassionate, community-centred medicine.
